With the onset of environmental awareness and performance sweeping the globe, universities and colleges are addressing a solution to tackling environmental issues.
EcoCampus is a national Environmental Management System (EMS) and award pilot scheme for the higher education sector. The scheme allows universities to be recognised for addressing key issues of environmental sustainability.
The EcoCampus project is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and is a collaborative project between Nottingham Trent University (NTU), Loreus Ltd and key partners, the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) and Environmental Campaigns (ENCAMS).
Loreus has developed the scheme and its software will involve further developing EcoCampus as a sector specific tool for rewarding EMS implementation and will link with 10 Universities, to pilot the schemes development. The scheme will run from December 2005 to December 2008.
The key and innovative aspects of the Loreus software tools are that it offers a phased, modular and incremental approach to developing an EMS that is tailored to situations where resources are limited or inexperienced.
